BCL men have attacked quota reformists at least 13 times in the last three months while injuring around 68 students of four public universities. But neither police nor the university authorities took action against any of the attackers. The attacked and injured reformists were denied justice and some of the injured were also arrested by the police or allegedly driven out of hospitals. And the perpetrators are roaming about scot-free on the campuses.
Not only the common people but the diplomatic community too expressed grave concern. Particularly, The Switzerland and Dutch embassies expressed their serious concerns over the recent attacks on peaceful demonstrations in the capital and other cities. We are shocked at this extreme degree of indifference being shown to our wounded students. We also don’t understand why the perpetrators, despite having first hand evidence about their identities, are still managing to get away with their crimes.
The ruling party must take note that a handful misguided students under the guise of student leaders and activists will not be of any help to the organisation and they will be of least help to win the upcoming elections. Moreover, the ruffians will corrupt the entire student wing and keep tarnishing the party image beyond repair.
However, the silent impunity offered to the attackers of BCL provides another account of how severe lawlessness has gripped the country. The PM must take stock of the month long anarchy resulting from the quota movement issue. We also expect her to sit with the BCL, condemn their atrocities, and if need be bring about a complete overhaul of the students’ wing. Bubbles of anger and resentment being denied of justice are getting bigger by the day.
We fear that, if no action is taken against the real culprits it will seriously damage the normal functioning of our public universities. More to it, the public is also losing their patience fast. The need of the minute is to act promptly to resist such criminal activities in the educational institutions.
