A court here on Tuesday placed Tariqul Islam Tarek, a leader of the quota reform movement, on a one-day remand in a case filed for obstructing police from discharging their duties. Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Kaisarul Islam passed the order after hearing a petition filed by Bahauddin Faroque, inspector of Detective Branch of police and also the investigation officer of the case, on July 10 seeking a seven-day remand. On July 10, the court granted a petition filed by Tarek seeking time so that he could appear in an examination. On April 9 last, when general students’ popular protest for quota reform was in its peak, some unknown masked attackers broke the main entrance of Dhaka University Vice-chancellor’s residence and ransacked several rooms and furniture. They also set fire to two vehicles parked inside the VC residence and obstructed police in discharging their duties. Later, Rabiul Islam, sub-inspector of Shahbagh Police Station, filed a case in this connection and Tariqul was shown arrested in the case.
