World Press Freedom Day observed: Quality journalism by ensuring rights of journos emphasised

Rajshahi University Journalist Association (RUJA) observed World Press Freedom day on campus yesterday.
On the occasion , RUJA brought out a procession on the campus from in front of the RUJA Office at 10:00am with the theme “Let journalism thrive towards better reporting, gender equality and media safety in digital age”
 A seminar titled “Freedom of Speech and Surety for better Future” was also held at the university deans’ complex followed by the procession.
 RUJA President M. A. Sayeed Shuvo presided over the seminar where RU vice Chancellor Prof Muhammad Mizanuddin and Pro-VC Prof Chowdhury Sarwar Jahan addressed the seminar as chief guest and special guest respectively.
 A key note paper was presented by Mamun Abdul Kaium, teacher of mass communication and journalism department of the university while Prof Biswajit Chanda, Dean of Law Faculty, Prof Moshiur Rahman and Prof Pradip Kumar Pandy of Mass Communication and Journalism Department were the key speakers.
Discussants at seminar emphasized on the safety of the journalists and combating impunity for crimes against freedom of expression.
RU VC Prof Mizanuddin said, journalists have to be independent economically as well as the mindset of the government for ensuring the freedom of press.
Barisal Correspondent adds: The World Press Freedom Day was observed in Barisal on Sunday calling for developing quality journalism by ensuring rights and safety of journalists. Barisal Reporters Unity arranged a procession from Ashwini Kumar Hall and a discussion meeting at the BRU premises on this occasion.
The programmes were participated by the journalists of print and electronics media demanding immediate implementation of wage board for the journalists working outside Dhaka and stopping harassments, oppressions against journalists.
The discussion programme was presided over by Nazrul Biswas, BRU president and conducted by BRU secretary Bappi Majumdar.
It was addressed among others, by Humayun Kabir, President TV Media Association, Pulak Chatterjee and Kazi Miraj, secretary and joint secretary of Barisal Press Club, Abul Kalam Azad, editor of local daily Shahnama, Giasuddin Sumon of Jatiya Sangbadik Sangstha, Bidhan Sarkar, Sushanta Ghosh, Anisur Rahman Swapan of BRU.
