A workshop titled “QS Masterclass on University Rankings & Ratings” was held organized by Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) at Council Building of BUET.
Dr. Mashiur Rahman, Economic Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister was present as the chief guest while Professor Dr. Abdul Mannan Choudhury, Vice-Chancellor, World University of Bangladesh (WUB) was present at the programme held recently as the special guest.
The function was chaired by Professor Dr. Saiful Islam, Vice-Chancellor of BUET.
While speaking Dr. Mashiur Rahman said, “Good quality improvement of education at the primary and secondary levels of the country is very important. I think the education of primary and secondary is very weak. That is why there are weaknesses in higher education too. It must be strengthened. He described the importance of mathematics, science and language education. The basis of mathematics and language education must be strengthened. Students will have to improve communication skills. If we are not as educated and skilled as technology changes, then it will be difficult to keep up with this change.”
Dr. Mashiur Rahman also said, “In the context of today there are many universities, whose ranking is important. The quality will be ranked in order to brand themselves. “By organizing such workshops, Bangladesh’s universities will be better in the future.
BUET Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr. Saiful Islam urged the government to increase the allocation for quality publications, research and research budget. He said about the university rankings, “The publication and research information will be regularly updated and published on the website of the university. Then the University Ranking companies will get the correct ideas about the universities of this country.
WUB Vice-Chancellor Abdul Mannan Chowdhury called upon the private universities to undertake advanced research.
In the seminar, about 150 participants including teachers and students from 47 universities of BUET and other public and private universities took part in the seminar.
In fact, the world’s university rankings generally manage three organizations. These are: Quakeyrely Symonds (QS), Times Higher Education and Shanghai Geo Tong University Ranking System. Among these, the Quakewarelli Symonds Ranking System is the most acceptable. This system is evaluating Bangladesh University of Engineering (BUET) since 2015.
