Quality education to achieve SDGs underscored

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid on Saturday laid emphasis on quality education to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“We are working to improve standard of education to create skilled workforce in the country,” he told the inaugural session of a two-day national conference titled “Achieving Sustainable Development Goals in Bangladesh: Educational responses, Challenges and Possibilities” at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban at the Dhaka University (DU) campus.
Presided over by Professor Syeda Tahmina Akhter, Director, IER, Institute of Education and Research (IER) has organized the two-day national conference.
The main aim of the conference is to create an effective multidisciplinary network on implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Bangladesh. All stakeholders including Universities, government agencies, national and international NGOs and development partners are taking part in the conference.
Speaking on the occasion, Nahid thanked IER for hosting such a conference to assist government initiatives in achieving sustainable development goals.
The discussants urged to expand education towards doorsteps of both rural and urban students and said there is no alternative to acquiring both practical and theoretical knowledge.
Sun Lei, Chief of Education of UNESCO Dhaka office, Professor Dr Md Yousuf Ali Mollah, Member, University Grants Commission (UGC), Md Sohrab Hossain Secretary of ministry of Education, Kazi M Aminul Islam Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Investment Development Authority, Md Abul Kalam Azad Principal Co-ordinator (SDG Affiar’s of the Prime Minister’s Office were present as special guests at the conference.
Former minister Syed Abul Hossain received special recognition at the conference for his contribution to education.
