Quail rearing in cage, a newly devised technology, has made a new chapter in poultry sector gaining popularity among the people of the district.
District Livestock office sources said a number of youths in Sadar, Raipura and Belabo upazilas of the district have been rearing Quail for the last four years due to its economic aspect. Didar Alam of Jinerdee union under Polash upazila of the district, the pioneer of quail rearing in cage in the district has started rearing Quail from 2012.
Didar was devastated periodically when he lost his job. But in a year he proved how to be self-reliant by struggling against poverty breaking the shackle of destitution by engaged in rearing of Quail. Didar started Quail rearing farm purchasing 600 Quail birds at a cost of Tk 20,000. Then he gradually increased more birds in his farm. But he was again devastated when all the Quail of his farm ruined by the bird flu. Didar is now financial solvent. He makes a comfortable living and built a two storied building.
At present he rearing 30,000 quail bird and every day he is getting over 20,000 eggs. The eggs of Quail have demand in the local market. He expressed his satisfaction for earned over Tk 10 lakh selling the eggs and chicken this year. District Livestock officer Dr Abdus Samad said this Correspondent quail rearing a new devised technology has made a new chapter in poultry sector. Quail is a small domestic bird. It is one of the species of poultry. He also said quail farming is more profitable. A Quail farmer easily can earn monthly Taka 10,000 to 12,000 by rearing 2,000 birds.
The Livestock officer said seeing the success of Didar and getting help from local Livestock Department a number of youth in different upazilas of the districts have started Quail rearing and it is gaining popularity day after day.
Secretary, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Salina Afroza in 2014 visited the Quail farm of Didar Alam at Polasher-char village of Polash upazila of the district. She expressed her satisfaction to see the Quail farm and said unemployed youths and marginal farmers and destitute women could contribute a lot to the rural economy through Quail rearing with small investment.
