UNB, Dhaka :
Apparently turning down the demand made by a group of his party MPs for appointing Raushan as its co-chairman, Jatiya Party Chairman Ershad on Monday said GM Quader is his capable successor to lead the party.
“I’ve selected my brother GM Quader as my competent successor. To speak the truth, I’ve grown very old, and now I’m at the last stage of my life. I know I won’t survive many more days. So, someone is needed to take the party leadership, and I think he (Quader) can do it,” he said.
Ershad, a former military dictator, came up with the remarks while addressing a views-exchange meeting with presidents and general secretaries of Jatiya Party’s city, district, upazila and municipal units at a convention centre in Gulshan.
The programme was arranged ahead of the party’s council and upcoming union parishad election.
Earlier on Sunday night, Jatiya Party’s Parliamentary Party at a meeting demanded that Ershad’s wife and opposition leader Raushan Ershad be appointed as the party co-chairman removing GM Quader. At the meeting, chaired by Raushan, the MPs also decided not to join any party programme if their demand is not met.
In an oblique reference to the party MPs’ demand, Ershad said, “I want to tell those who want to take my position they have also grown old. Let the younger generation to take the leadership.”
He also warned those of dire consequences who are violating organisational discipline. “Discipline is a very important matter of a party. You’ll see what fate they face those who are breaking party discipline. You’ll see, people will reject them,” the JaPa chief observed.
Ershad alleged that the grassroots leaders were asked over phone to boycott their views-exchange meeting with him. “But no one paid heed to them.”
Jatiya Party co-chairman GM Quader and secretary general ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader, among others, spoke at the discussion.
