Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader has asked the leaders of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) to hold its next council within March this year to elect its new leadership.
Obaidul Quader, also Minister for Road Transport and Bridges, suggested the BCL’s incumbent committee to hold the central executive committee meeting to fix the date of the new council.
He came up with the instruction while inaugurating the 70th founding anniversary of the student front at Aparajeya Bangla on the Dhaka University
campus on Saturday morning. BCL President Saifur Rahman Sohag presided over the programme while General Secretary SM Jakir Hossain conducted it.
Hundreds of former and current leaders and activists of the organisation took part in the programme.
Obaidul Quader also stressed the need for increasing quality leadership instead of quantity of leaders and activists, saying that the Awami League president had instructed to take organisational and administrative actions against those who would be found involved in criminal activities.
He said he has already discussed the issue with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina who also expressed her willingness to hold the new council of the party’s student front.
Lambasting Bangladesh Nationalist Party Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s remarks, Obaidul Quader said that 2018 would be the year of defeat for the ‘BNP-led sectarian force’ who wants to unstable the country.
Later, several thousand leaders and activists of the student wing brought out a procession which paraded several streets of the city before it ended on the premises of the party office at Bangabandhu Avenue in the capital.
Earlier on January 2, a faction of Bangladesh Chhatra League demanded new committee as the tenure of the incumbent committee expired in July 2017.
