Staff Reporter :
The BNP on Saturday accused the Chief Election Commissioner of working to make the government happy.
“The CEC has shut its eyes to the Prime Minister’s election campaign. The CEC’s few recent remarks give an impression that he is not interested to hold a fair election nor to create a level-playing field,” BNP Senior Joint-Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said it while addressing a press briefing at the party’s Nayapaltan office on the day.
He also censured the Awami League General Secretary for his comment that the BNP staged its sit-in programme illegally, and said; Obaidul Quader is an ‘unrestrained liar’. “Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader is a desperate liar. He said that BNP held its programme illegally. How did he tell such a brazen lie? What else can we call him other than an unrestrained liar?” he questioned.
He said their party sought permission for the sit-in programme from police and that they received a copy of the letter. “Even, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner spoke with our secretary general about the permission,” he said.
“We had a plan to hold the programme in front of our party’s central office on Thursday. As police requested us to stage it in front of the Press Club, we came here,” he said.
The BNP leader voiced concern that their party’s nearly 6,500 arrested leaders and activists are not getting bail from the lower courts due to the government’s interference.
Rizvi strongly condemned the assault on women in the city on March 7.
Earlier, Rizvi led a procession in front of the party office in the morning as part of the protest programme in each thana in the city.
