A marriage registrar (Qazi) in Kaliganj upazila of Jhenaidah was awarded one month imprisonment for registering child marriage. Upazila nirbahi officer, also an executive magistrate Sadequr rahman gave the verdict on Tuesday afternoon. The convict was Moulana Asadul Islam, 55, of late Elahi Bakhs of Bagergachhi village of Kaliganj.
Upazila nirbahi officer Sadequr Rahman said, Asadul Islam allegedly registered the marriage of a class nine student of Bagergacchi high school Rimi Khatun, 14, with some Sakib on Tuesday noon. She was the daughter of Hazrat Ali of Manderbaria village in same upazila.
Acting the information the executive magistrate along with upazila women affairs officer Khondaker Sharifa Akter, upazila agriculture officer Jahidul Karim and sub inspector of Kaliganj police station Ranzan Kumar appeared there in the afternoon and awarded the Qazi for one month imprisonment. The guardians and bride managed to flee sensing the of police presence, UNO said.
