Unesco DG poll: Qatar seeks BD’s support

Qatar has sought support from Bangladesh to elect its representative to the post of Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) for the 2017-2021 period.
Visiting Qatar Amir’s Adviser Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kuwari, who will contest the Unesco DG post, met Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor at the Secretariat and sought Bangladesh’s support. Dr Hamad, a former minister for culture, arts and heritage, is now visiting Bangladesh as part of his campaign to gather
support from Bangladesh in the election. At the meeting with Noor, he said the Qatar government announced that it nominated him to the Unesco DG post, which is supposed to fall vacant by November 2017.
As part of his campaign, he visited various European and African countries and now on tours of Asian countries to mobilize support.
But he chose Bangladesh for his first leg of visit to Asian countries, and expects Bangladesh’s support. Minister Noor wished him the best in the election race.
