‘Pvt varsities to face legal action if terms not met’

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said that government would take legal action very soon against the private universities, which have failed to fulfill their conditions to run the university under the rules of the Private University Act-2010 within the stipulated time.
The Minister said this while presiding over the 2nd convocation of the Prime University (PU) as the representative of President Abdul Hamid at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the capital on Sunday.
“Some of the private
universities are yet to fulfil their minimum conditions as per the Act and they have to face legal action after the scheduled timeframe,” said Nahid.
He said that, the private universities would have to follow ‘Private University Act 2010’ and create congenial atmosphere for modern and time-befitting research and develop libraries and laboratories.
Professor Emeritus of the Dhaka University Professor Dr Anisuzzaman was the convocation speaker while PU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Abdus Sobhan, Chairman of Private University Owners Association Sheikh Kabir, Chairman of PU Board of Trustee Engineer M Touhidur Rahman and Vice Chairman of PU Board of Trustee Ashraf Ali also spoke on the occasion.
Nahid told the function that the government has finalized enactment of Higher Education Commission Act for strengthening the University Grant Commission (UGC). Accreditation Council Act is also at the final stage for enhancing the standard of the higher education, the Minister added.
In the function, the Minister awarded certificates to 2,000 graduates.
