Al Mamun, Mayor of Puthia municipality in Rajshahi, was arrested by the police from his driver’s house in Barguna on the charge of rape case.
He was arrested from Heulibunia area of Barguna Sadar around 10:30 am on Wednesday. Al Mamun is the son of one Ali Hossain of Gandgohali village of Puthia upazila. He was the former General Secretary of Puthia Upazila BNP.
Ali Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Barguna Sadar Police Station confirmed the matter to the media saying that the accused Mayor Al Mamun will be handed over to Puthia police through formal procedure.
According to police, a woman filed a rape case accusing Mayor of Puthia municipality in Rajshahi Al Mamun Khan on September 4. Al Mamun had been missing since filing the case against him. Based on the information gleaned from Puthia police station, Mayor Al Mamun was arrested from Heulibunia area of Barguna sadar on Wednesday morning.
It is learnt that the daughter of a local timber merchant went to the mayor for a job in the municipality in April last year. After that, Mayor Mamun regularly raped the young woman under various temptations. At one point, as she did not agree to this immoral act, the mayor raped her several more times under the temptation of marriage. Recently, the mayor told the victim that he would not marry the girl.
Later victim filed a case against the mayor in this incident. The mayor was absconding since the incident. On Wednesday morning Barguna police learned that Mamun was hiding in his driver’s house in Barguna Sadar. Later he was arrested by raiding there.
