Pabna University of Science and Technology (PUST) has been closed till September 30 after a group of students ransacked the campus against frequent power disruption in the university.
The university administration took the decision in an emergency meeting on Saturday.
Proctor of the PUST Awal Kabir Joy said some students tried to destabilize the academic activities of the university for no valid reason.
“To avoid further untoward incident on the campus, the university administration decided to close the university,” he said.
The students have also been asked to vacate dormitories by 5:00pm today (Sunday).
Meanwhile, a seven-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident.
About five hundred students of Bangabandhu Hall started protest demanding the undisrupted power in the halls. At one stage they set three university buses on fire and vandalised two more buses on the campus around 1:30am.
The university authorities tried to manage the students, but failed. In the afternoon the administration took the decision to close the university.
The students alleged that they have been suffering from frequent power outage for long. They requested the university authorities several times to resolve the problem. But the authorities did not try to improve the situation.
“Our study is being disturbed due to frequent power outage. The university authorities failed to ensure power in the halls and other parts of the university. We had nothing to do but to protest,” Asif Talukder, a student of the university said.
Extra law enforcers agencies have been deployed in and around the campus to avoid any untoward incident.
