UNB, Dhaka :
Samajtantrik Women Forum on Friday demanded that exemplary punishment be meted out to the rapists and those killed women, including minor girl Punati Tripura Krittika in Khagrachhari, after rape.
The demand was made from a rally arranged in front of the Jatiya Press Club demanding punishment of all rapists and killer rapists.
Punati, a nine-year-old Tripura community girl, was raped and murdered in Dighinala upazila of Khagrachhari recently.
Speakers at the rally said though the killing and kidnapping of women and violence against them are happening repeatedly across the country, no effort is visible to bring an end to this which is an example of state’s reluctance to ensure justice for the victims.
They said as per the media reports, at least 15 incidents of rape and killing after rape happened in the hill tracts of Chattagram in the current year. But the actual number is much higher.
A total of 427 rape incidents took place in the last six months across the country while the number of killing after rape, family violence, killing after harassment, violence against children and killing of children after harassment is 37, 208, 144, 856 and 148 respectively. The speakers also said the government must take the responsibility for not bringing the culprits to justice and meting out strict punishment to the killers and rapists.
This is inspiring the offenders to repeat the crimes, they said.
The speakers also stressed the need for ensuring speedy trial of the cases filed over violence against children and women.
Samajtantrik Women Forum President Rowsan Ara Roshu presided over the programme while its General Secretary Shampa Basu and member of the central advisory committee Samsun Nahar Josna were present.
