US President Donald Trump has once again come under the spotlight for his contentious proclamation for officially recognising Israeli rule over the Golan Heights. He signed a presidential proclamation last week in this regard. The decision is likely to trigger dangerous geo-political repercussions, and especially when the Golan Heights is still considered as Syrian territory under international law.
For decades, international law has held that territory seized in a war must be returned. But Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel asserted Tuesday that this was no longer an important legal condition.
Trump’s Golan Heights proclamation is a wicked move to be of help to Netanyahu in Israel’s forthcoming election. Netanyahu is in difficulties for corruption allegations against him.
Israel has been armed to be a nuclear power to punish Muslims in the Middle East. Netanyahu is a vile leader for loving war and killing helpless Palestinians at the slightest protest by Palestinian people against Israeli oppression for their legitimate claim over illegally occupied territories.
Mr Trump and Netanyahu are a fatal combination for peace. Both are power conscious unstable leaders. And both are instinctively Muslim haters. For his controversial moves one after another, the US, by now, has lost much of its credibility as a global leader for protecting human rights. This time Trump’s blatant and sinister alliance with Israel to justify the occupation of the Golan Heights by war is a clear indication that war for occupation of other country’s territory is justified.
What is unfortunate for the Muslim countries is that they are divided against each other but not united against their common enemy. As a result, President Trump does not take the Muslim countries seriously though the USA gets maximum cooperation from the Muslim countries. Only Malaysia has refused to be bullied by the USA. The subservient role of Saudi Arabia is proving most damaging and shameful. It is terribly wrong for Saudi King to be sure of the US help if the country is in real trouble. Everybody knows the belief that the USA will provide defence protection if Saudi Arabia is attacked it we can say this belief is misleading.
The world has marked innumerable military and non-military conflicts between Israel and the Muslim world since 1948, but the tense situation never appeared so explosive as now over Golan Heights.
A majority of Security Council members stressed the importance of upholding international law regarding the occupied Golan Heights, in the face of the unilateral move by the United States to recognise Israel’s sovereignty over them.
Sadly, the UN resolution against Trump’s decision on Golan Heights is not strong enough to make Trump to reverse his policy or Netanyahu to be less intransigent.
The Muslim countries must show their muscles in helping Palestinian people to secure its sovereign statehood under two-state policy. There is the urgent need for the Muslim countries to realise that the Palestinians are being part of punishing the Muslims everywhere.
Hatred against Muslims will not help to build a peaceful world. The right path has been shown by the Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and the people of New Zealand. The offer of trust and friendship most sincerely extended to Muslims for unity and togetherness must be followed in the greater interest of peace and progress in the world.
