Pumpkin cultivation in the sandbar has gained much popularity among the extreme poor people living in the Teesta river basins in recent years. They are happy as the production takes effect in the dry season when almost the char people remain jobless.
Such a spot is Karpura char of Daldalia union under Ulipur Upazila in Kurigram district. The poor who are living in the basins of Teesta cultivated pumpkin in 18200 pits of the sandbar. They started to harvest the crop and expected that each of beneficiaries will get 260 to 320 pumpkin weighing about three tonnes.
On April 22 from a spot visit, it was observed that the poor people were working with their family members (male and female) to harvest pumpkin. They expressed their feeling saying that they had, cultivated a crop in sandbar where they could not produce anything previously.
“I will buy a cow by selling pumpkin and will bear my daughter’s educational expenses who studies at class seven in a local high school,”
