Two wickets in the last two overs of the day were the only blemishes in an otherwise perfect day for Team India, who are now within 18 runs of saving the follow on after centuries by Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara
India ended the day on 319/4 after Murali Vijay was sent back by Adil Rashid on the last ball of the penultimate over of the day. Amit Mishra came out as the night-watchman, but lasted only two deliveries with Haseeb Hameed taking another fine catch at forward short-leg to give Zafar Ansari his first wicket of the match. India trailing the visitors by 218 runs with six wickets in hand.
Earlier, The visitors started the day brightly as pacer Stuart Broad dismissed Gautam Gambhir on the seventh ball of the day. Gambhir was trapped in front of the wicket for 29.
In-form Cheteshwar Pujara then joined forces with Murali Vijay in the middle and the duo kept the scoreboard ticking. Local boy Pujara took the game by the scruff of its neck as he dished out punishment to each and every English bowler early on in his innings.
Vijay was the first one to reach his half century with a huge six over the bowler’s head. In the next over, Pujara completed his half century by hitting a trademark boundary through the covers. India went into lunch 375 runs behind the visitors.
Post lunch the hosts continued their onslaught to take India past the 200 runs mark. Vijay was given a lifeline after Hameed dropped a difficult chance at short cover.
Pujara was caught in front of the crease by Zafar Ansari when on 86 and was given out by the umpire. But the local boy made good use of the Decision Review System (DRS) as the DRS showed the ball was missing the stumps. The on-field umpire’s decision was over turned, giving Pujara a chance to score a century on his home ground.
