Sylhet Bureau :
The five-day main religious festival of the Bengali Hindu community, Durga Puja, is going to start on Monday. Keeping the Durga Puja in mind, traders of Sylhet hoped to have a good sale of cloths and accessories. However, they are left disappointed as the shopping spree failed to pick up a pace in the Sylhet city and District.
Although, new clothes were imported in the hope of selling them to the buyers on the occasion of the Durga Puja, they were not sold as expected. Shopping did not turned into a spree there, even at the last moment.
Visiting the local markets on Sunday night, sellers were seen waiting for buyers in their shops at different markets including Hasan Market, Maduban, Blue Water, Mohajonpatti, Sukria Market, Hokar Market From time to time only one or two shoppers came to the shops.
Shah Sadek, owner of Surma Bostraloi in Hasan market, said the puja will start in two days but, there is no pressure of buyers like past.
It goes without saying that there are no middle or lower class buyers to be seen anywhere.
Mohi Uddin, owner of Maha, said that the biggest festival of the Hindu community will start in a couple of days but, they are spending time without buyers there.
The salaries of the employees of the shop, the rent of the shop all have to be paid from one’s own pocket now. I stored Punjabi, Jamdani sari, three-piece set and all kinds of modern clothes centering the puja but, they did not sell as expected, he added.
