Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members arrested five suspected members of two different militant outfits in separate drives in Tongi and Signboard areas of the Gazipur city early Wednesday.
The arrested persons are Sifat Shamim alias Rasheduzzaman Rush, Acting Southern Region Ameer of banned militant outfit Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh
(JMB), Sahabuddin, Firoz and Saiful, members of the same outfit, and Abdul Hye, a leader of another militant outfit Ahl al-Hadith, said RAB-1 Captain Major Azam said.
Shamim is believed to be the mastermind of the murder of publishing house Jagriti Prokashony owner Faisal Arefin Dipan, the RAB official said.
A cash bounty of Tk 200,000 had been announced earlier for Shamim’s capture, he said.
A computer, a pistol, two magazines, eight rounds of bullets, three improvised bombs, large quantity of explosives, 16 knives, two machetes, some of jihadi books, were seized during the drive, he added.
Terminated Army officer Syed Md Ziaul Haque trained the killers of Jagriti Publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan and other assassin cells of Ansarullah Bangla Team (ABT), confessed detained Dipan murder suspect Shamim.
Additional Commissioner of Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Unit (CTTC) Monirul Islam disclosed this in a press briefing on Wednesday afternoon.
Shamim alias Somir alias Imran was detained from Gazipur’s Tongi area on Tuesday night. He is a suspected top leader of the ABT.
The CTTC chief said, “Samim told us he had met Ziaul a couple of times and that the suspended Major trained them and gave them motivational speeches.”
On August 13, the investigators termed Ziaul Haque as the mastermind behind the murder of bloggers across the country.
Dipan, whose publishing house brought out a book of slain writer-blogger Avijit Roy, was hacked to death in capital’s Aziz Supermarket on October 31 last year.
