Teachers of the country’s public universities will abstain from their works on September 13 and 17 to press home their several demands, including an independent pay scale for them. The announcement came from a meeting of the Federation of Bangladesh University Teachers’ Association (FBUTA) held at Surya Sen Hall of Dhaka University on Sunday noon, general secretary of FBUTA Prof Maksud Kamal said. However, the Dhaka University authorities have decided to hold examinations on the two days amid their work abstention, he said. Earlier, the FBUTA announced to observe the programme every Sunday to press for their demands. Similar programmes were observed in other public universities, including Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Hajee Mohammad Danesh Science & Technology University (HMDSTU) and Rajshahi University. Earlier on Monday, the cabinet, avoiding traditional selection grades and time-scale, approved the long-awaited pay scale for public servants. Teachers of all the 37 public universities in the country abstained from work on Tuesday, terming the new pay scale ‘disgraceful’ for them. — Dhaka, Sept 10 (UNB)
