The grassroots level elected public representatives should have adequate knowledge on the Right to Information (RTI) Act for smoothly running the local government bodies ensuring accountability and transparency.
The observation came out at a daylong orientation course on ‘Right to Information Act Issues’ held yesterday at Janata Mahendranagar Federation Office under Sadar upazila of Lalmonirhat district.
RDRS Bangladesh, a reputed NGO, organised the event under the Strengthening Community-based Organisations for Pro-poor Democratic Governance Project for the grassroots level public representatives to create awareness among them on RTI.
The NGO organised the course for ensuring rights of the public representatives and common people to information before observing the Right to Information Day-2015 on September 28 next. Four male and six female union parishad members, eight federation members with one from each federation from eight unions under Sadar upazila, district and divisional level federation leaders participated. President of Janata Mahendranagar Federation Ashraful Alam presided over the orientation course.
Valiant freedom fighter Alhaj Shafikul Islam Kanu and Senior Trainer of the Strengthening Community-based Organisations for Pro-poor Democratic Governance Project of RDRS Bangladesh Shah Alam delivered presentations as resource persons.
Programme Manager (Filed Coordination) of RDRS Bangladesh for Lalmonirhat Maidul Islam, male and female union parishad members and federation members, addressed.
The resource persons narrated about the RTI Act-2009 and highlighted the commitment and different steps taken by the present government for its proper implementation to ensure rights of the people to information. The speakers said enactment of the RTI-2009 is one of the biggest big successes of the government as the law has been ensuring the peoples’ right to know in establishing transparency and accountability at all levels.
They put emphasis on observance of the Right to Information Day-2015 at upazila and union levels involving commoners to create public awareness on the RTI Act for availing the facilities being provided by the local government bodies and government.
