Public relations becoming important for success of organization- Speakers

In this global communication world, efficient public relations are playing a vital role in making any public-private organization popular among the people. So, the big companies are just now relying on advertising but have a separate section called Public Relations. In order to face this new challenge, communication students need to acquire necessary skills.
The speakers said this at a webinar titled “Career in PR: Scopes and Skills” organized by the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication (JMC) of Daffodil International University (DIU) on 24 October 2020.
Sujan Mahmud, Head of Media, Nagad was present at the program as keynote speaker while Mr. Mominul Haque Majumder, Treasurer, DIU, delivered the welcome address.
Beside this Dr. Sheikh Shafiul Islam, head of Journalism and Mass Communication department, Md. Anowar Habib Kazal, Senior Assistant Director (Public Relations) of DIU, Mr. Rashedul Islam Ratul, Coordinator of Career Development Center (CDC) and Faculty member of JMC also spoke the program. The webinar was hosted by Enayetur Rahman, Faculty of JMC.
Sujan Mahmood said that more efficiently an organization can reach people through public relations. In this case, mass communication and journalism education and working experiences in media can make one successful in public relations.
For building career, he urged the students to gain experience in journalism first and then move on to public relations. He said, experience in journalism can help you to develop a writing style for the media, as well as build relationship with journalists and the media personnel. Bridging this network helps a lot in public relations.
Sujan Mahmud also said, studying on mass communication and working experience in journalism are two important things which play an important role in getting a job in public relations. He shared his experience in this regard.
Dr. Sheikh Shafiul Islam said that it is possible to be successful in public relations through proper application of communication science. We are regularly revising the syllabus to meet the needs of the age. At present a course called ‘Public Relations’ is being taught in the JMC department. In addition, many courses in mass communication and digital communication are being taught, which are able to develop a student as a skilled communicator according to the current needs.
He said the JMC department has set up with digital labs and TV and radio studios for the practical work of the students. In addition, “Campus TV”, “Campus Radio”, “Prominent” news portals and practice newspapers called “JMC Gazette” have been launched for students, where students have the opportunity to work.
Md. Anwar Habib Kazal in his speech pointed put his career long experience and emphasized on enhancing skills through practical work experience from the beginning of study.
