Speakers at an international conference on Saturday said rate of poverty alleviation in urban areas is slow because of unplanned urbanization and underscored the need for taking steps at public-private level to face the situation.
They said one type of poverty friendly urbanization is taking place which is a barrier to achieving the target of becoming a middle income country.
Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC) and Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) jointly organized the two-day international conference ‘Urban Poverty: Challenges of Perspectives and Action.
Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal was scheduled to attend the opening session as the chief guest but he could not join it. He gave the speech through a video message. PPRC Chairman Hossain Zillur Rahman presided over it.
State minister for finance and planning MA Mannan, economist Dr Wahiduddin Mahmud, BBS director general Abdul Wazed, PPRC senior fellow Liaquat Ali Chowdhury, among others, spoke at the session.
