The Pay and Services Commission is weighing options to pay civil servants their dearness allowance in kind and not in cash.
The commission’s chairman Mohammad Farashuddin said that he was considering providing insurance to the government employees as an alternative to paying them the allowances in cash.
The newly formed body held its third meeting on Tuesday.
It was attended, among others, by Finance minister AMA Muhith and Public Administration State Minister Ismat Ara Sadique.
Speaking to the media after the meeting, Farashuddin said allowances paid in cash impacts on inflation.
“We expect highest efficiency from government officials, for which appropriate pay and allowances has to be given. But, the problem is inflation rises when allowances are paid in cash,” he said.
The commission, whose tenure expires on June 17, will not submit any report before the FY14 budget, said the former central bank chief.
“We have asked the government to increase our tenure by 6 months. We want to submit a report before December this year,” he added.
