DU Correspondent :
Progressive Student Alliance (PSA), a platform of some left leaning student organisations, on Sunday called strike at Dhaka University (DU) tomorrow (Tuesday) to realise their four-point demands.
The demands are: ban on all evening courses in the public universities including Rajshahi University and
cancellation of all extra fees, withdrawal of all cases filed against the progressive students, to give medical support to the injured student of Rajshahi University and withdrawal the decision of Tk one lakh and thirty-seven thousand extra fees for the DU’s Television and Film Studies Department.
The PSA leaders announced the strike at a press conference held at the Modhu’s Canteen on the campus yesterday.
Bangladesh Chhatra Union DU unit President Maruf Billah, Chhatra Front DU unit President Rashed Shahriar and General Secretary Ruhul Amin, Chhatra Federation DU unit Organising Secretary Sadik Reza, among others, were present at the press conference.
The leaders of the alliance alleged, the teachers and the authorities of the public universities are doing business in the name of education. They just use the university and sale certificate from those who are capable to give them huge money.
They alleged that the university authorities and the University Grants Commission (UGC) were implementing the assignment of World Bank. That is why they want to make the public universities as commercial one.
They also said that they submitted to the DU Vice-Chancellor Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique for cancellation the decision of getting extra fees in the Television and Film Studies Department. But the university authorities are yet to take any decision to press our demand. So, we called strike in the university.
They called upon the general students to respond their call and refrain themselves from attending any class on Tuesday.
