Teachers of government primary schools have threatened to boycott the upcoming Primary Education Completion (PEC) examination (scheduled to be held from November 17) if their demands are not met by November 13.
They have also warned that they will lock the educational institutions under lock and key if their demands are not met within deadline.
The teachers on Wednesday gave an ultimatum to eliminate salary discrimination by November 13 and also to arrange a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina within this period.
Atikur Rahman, Chief Convener of the Bangladesh Primary Teachers Oikkya Parishad, made the announcement after police thwarted their congregation in front of the Central Shaheed Minar in the capital in the morning of Wednesday.
Earlier, they were gathered in front of Central Shaheed Minar to hold their pre-scheduled mass rally.
But police foiled their programme. Later, the agitating teachers took position in front of Doel Chattar failing to hold the rally.
President of the Primary School Teachers’ Association (PSTA), Badrul Alam, said, “Police resorted to lathi charge at the Shahid Minar, injurers several teachers, including the General Secretary Sabera Khatun has been wounded.”
Demonstrating teachers placed the demands including elimination of salary disparity as well as implementation of salaries in the 11th grade for the Assistant Teachers and
10th grade for Headmasters.
For realization of demands, teachers refrained from work for four days. On October 17, they observed a full day work strike.
The teachers joined the demonstration at the Shaheed Minar on October 23, though Director General (DG) of the Department of Primary Education (DPE), ordered the teachers in a letter to refrain from joining the demonstration and report to their work places.
