Court Correspondent :
The High Court on Tuesday asked the Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (REB) to provide Tk 50 lakh as compensation within 30 days to Siam Khan who lost his two hands after coming in contact with a snapped electric wire in Shariatpur district.
An HC bench of Justice Quazi Reza-Ul Hoque and Justice Mohammad Ullah passed the order after hearing a writ petition.
Sifat Mahmud, a Supreme Court lawyer, filed the writ attaching a report titled ‘Siam’s two hands amputated’ published in several vernacular dailies on May 24.
On April 5, Siam Khan, a resident of Bijari village in Naria upazila of Shariatpur, came in contact with a live electric wire
which got snapped during a storm, leaving him injured. Later, both of his hands were amputated.
Following the writ petition, the court summoned the REB member (distribution and supply), general manager of Palli Bidyut Samity, assistant general manger of Naria sub-zonal office and Shariatpur of Palli Bidyut Samity secretary. They appeared before the court on May 29.
On May 30, the High Court fixed July 4 for the submission of the probe report after the REB lawyer informed the court that investigation was going on.
It had also issued a rule asking the government to explain as to why the failure of the respondents to ensure safety after the snapping of power connection following a natural disaster should not be declared as negligence, why they should not be held responsible for Siam’s condition and why compensation should not be provided to the victim. As the probe report was submitted to the court on Tuesday, the HC bench came up with the order, said Sifat Mahmud.
