BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Monday called upon the government and law enforcement agencies to provide shelter and security to the Rohingya people who are fleeing their homeland Myanmar
to save their lives following a fresh violence there. She also hoped that the Myanmar government will move ahead with a wise and farsighted policy to ensure the security of life and residence of Rohingyas and stop bloody violence against them. In a statement, Khaleda said, “Myanmar’s Rohingya men, women and children have been staying on the bank of Naf River along the Bangladesh with deep fear and uncertainty about their shelter. This scene is inhumane, painful and distressing.”
She further said, “I urge the Bangladesh’s administration concerned and law enforcement agencies to give shelter to the Rohingya women, men and children who are fleeing from Myanmar in fear of life and ensure all-out security for them.” The BNP chief, now in London, came up with such a call amid the government and the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB)’s refusal to allow no more refugees from Myanmar.
At least 89 people were killed as militants besieged border posts in northern Rakhine State of Myanmar on Friday. The attack triggered a fresh influx of refugees towards Bangladesh.
After visiting the Myanmar-Bangladesh border area along Ghumdhum BGB border out-post, BGB DG Abul Hossain on Sunday said additional forces have been deployed along the 271-km border with Myanmar to prevent fresh influx of Rohingyas. On Saturday, the government directed the local administration to employ its best efforts to restrict the entry of fresh Rohingyas into the country saying not a single person will be allowed in the name of ‘humanity’.
