The world will celebrate ‘World Egg Day’ to fight malnutrition, hunger and poverty on 10 October 2014. The Day is very significant for the developing nations especially for Bangladesh where hundreds and thousands of pregnant mothers and children are dying for nutrient deficiencies, where population are increasing but cultivable lands are decreasing alarmingly.
To celebrate the ‘World Egg Day’, Bangladesh Poultry Industries Coordination Committee (BPICC), an apex body of seven poultry related associations, has urged citizen to double intake of eggs and urged the school authority as well as the government to provide the students boiled eggs thrice a week and say ‘no’ to unhealthy oily food in Tiffin.
Moshiur Rahman, Convenor, BPICC said that eggs would play a vital role to eliminate malnutrition and poverty from Bangladesh. To him egg is a ‘super food’. Egg is enriched with protein, vitamins and minerals that helps the growing children to build muscle, normal formation of brain tissue and memory.
According to Rahman, though the egg intake has increased in Bangladesh, it’s not up-to-the mark. He said, “the per capita egg intake per annum is only 35 but FAO has advised for minimum 104 eggs. It means that the egg intake should be at least double if we want a healthy and meritorious future generation. If we fail to reach the goal within the next 5-7 years, the nation’s progress will be hampered”, Moshiur added.
Taher Ahmed Siddique, president of the Egg Producers Association of Bangladesh (EPAB), said that the media had been picking up stories of students falling ill having Tiffin. “One of the main reason for such illness is unhealthy and oily food provided by the school authority. Instead of such oily stuffs we recommend boiled eggs, which is the safest food with high nutrient value”, Siddique added.
Fazle Rahim Khan Shahriar, president, The Breeders Association of Bangladesh (BAB) said, there should be countrywide campaign for eggs. Our motto is to produce enough eggs to feed our people at a minimum cost and thereby eliminate malnutrition.
Dr. MM Khan, general secretary, the Poultry Industries Association of Bangladesh (PIAB) said, our slogan for this year is “Eat 75 eggs annually and keep healthy”.
Rafiqul Haque, secretary, the World’s Poultry Science Association-Bangladesh Branch (WPSA-BB) said, “Eggs are one of nature’s highest quality sources of protein, and indeed contain many of the key ingredients for life. Lutein and zeaxanthin are two newly-recognized nutrients that have put eggs in the “functional foods” category. It can significantly lower risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of blindness affecting people over the age of 65.
Egg yolk is an excellent source of choline, a nutrient now considered essential for human health. Research has shown choline to be required for normal formation of brain tissue and memory and to play a role in preventing heart disease”.
Momin ud Dowla, president, the Animal Health Companies Association of Bangladesh (AHCAB) said, Egg is very affordable and widely accessible. The world Egg Day promotes the versatility, taste and all-round goodness of the common egg! “Now-a-days, you can get liquid and boiled eggs. Egg yolk and the white part (Albumen) is sold separately. Egg powder is also available. To meet the growing demand of the consumers, eggs with Omega 3 is also available in Bangladeshi market.
Khondker Monsur Hossain, secretary of the Feed Industries Association Bangladesh (FIAB) said, World Egg Day is celebrated every year on the second Friday in October. The occasion recognizes the global appeal of the billions of nutritious eggs produced worldwide. Egg-producing countries all over the world celebrate the event in different ways.
