The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka yesterday granted bail to Prothom Alo Editor and Publisher Matiur Rahman in the case filed over the death of Naimul Abrar Rahat, a student of Dhaka Residential Model College.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (in-charge) Md Kaysarul Islam passed the order upon a bond of Tk 2,000 with two guarantors after Matiur Rahman surrendered in the court seeking bail in the case.
Earlier, on January 20, the High Court Division of the Supreme Court granted him bail for four weeks and directed him to appear

in the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court immediately after completion of the bail period. As per direction of the apex court, Matiur Rahman surrendered before the CMM court and sought bail.
Abrar, a ninth-grade student, was electrocuted during the anniversary programme of Prothom Alo’s youth magazine Kishore Alo on November 3, last year. He became unconscious while attending the function.
The 14-year-old boy was taken to Universal Medical College and Hospital in Mohakhali after 45 minutes of the incident, whereas Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital was very close to the venue of the event. The incident occurred at 3.30 pm, while Abrar was declared dead at 4.51 pm that day.
His father, Mojibur Rahman filed a case with the Fourth Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka on November 6. Abrar might have lived had the Prothom Alo authorities immediately taken him to the nearby hospital, the victim’s father complained.
