A group of hackers claiming themselves as the supporters of quota reform movement on Tuesday hacked many government websites, including those of the Prime Minister’s Office, Home Ministry and President’s Office.
The homepage of the hacked sites was replaced with a page demanding quota reform and posted a photo of the ongoing protests.
Google search result for the Education Ministry on Tuesday midnight showed “Hacked by Bangladesh”.
The websites of Home Ministry, Education Ministry and Agriculture Ministry and the Public Service Commission were found hacked around 12:00am Wednesday.
Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology Minister Mustafa Jabbar said, “The intelligence department is working to trace the hackers. They (hackers) might have used the name of the agitating anti-quota platform.”
By this time all the websites should be up as the recovery works were initiated immediately after the incident happened on Tuesday night.
“Websites across the world are being hacked in recent time. In line with those incidents, the government websites might have been hacked,’ the minister said.
Students and job seekers around the country have been demanding reformation of the existing quota system in government jobs. In the last few days the protests escalated to violent confrontations with police in the Dhaka University area.
The students of public and private universities in Dhaka and other parts of the country have also been demonstrating for the same demand.
