Protesters block Dhaka-Aricha Highway over pre-paid power meters

Several hundred people on Thursday blocked the Dhaka-Aricha Highway near Dhmrai Thana Road demanding ban on pre-paid power meters for unusual cost comparing the normal bill system.
The protesters also besieged the Palli Bidyut Samity-3, Dhamrai Zonal office to press home their demand.
A long tailback has been seen on the highway as the protesters blocked the roads for an hour.
Seyed Rasidul Haq, inhabitant of the Ward No. 5 under Dhamari Municipal, told The New Nation, “We are committed to continue our protest against pre-paid power meter in the area.”
Dhaka Palli Bidyut Samity-3 Branch Manager Khalid Mohammad Salauddin said, “The pre-paid meters have no service charge, the clients pay only demand charge that only Tk 25 in residential areas.”
There are more than 20,000 Pre-paid meters and 15 recharge centers in the area, but not a single complaint yet to reach the local office, he said.
Dhamari Officer-in-Charge (OC) Dipak Chandra Saha said that law enforcers rushed to spot and convinced the protesters to withdraw their demonstration in the sake of the public interest.
The Power Development Board (PDB) has introduced pre-paid meters in Dhaka, Chattograng, Bogura, Sylhet and Sirajganj areas recently.
