Spark of protest on campus by thousands of teachers and students of Rajshahi University yesterday entered into seventh consecutive day demanding punitive measures against AL MP Omar Faruque Chowdhury and party’s City General Secretary Dablu Sarker for their ‘virulent’ behaviour with the Vice-Chancellor. As a part of protest, over 300 teachers and students of Mass Communication and Journalism Department yesterday formed a human chain at 11:30am in front of the Arts building.
Speakers at a human chain demanded immediate arrest of AL MP and leaders and urged the Prime Minister to ensure exemplary punishment to them.
Among others, Prof Tanvir Ahmed, Chairman of the Department, Associate Professor Khademul Islam, Moshiur Rahman addressed at human chain.
At the same time, about 250 teachers and students of Information Science and Library Management Department also staged a human chain on the Arts building premises.
Demanding the punishment to AL MP and leaders, speakers at human chain also declared them persona non grata.
The students and teachers also sought interference of the University Chancellor to uphold the autonomous characteristics of the university.
Meanwhile, as per the decision of the university Chairman Council, chairmen of all the fifty two departments also observed work abstention programme yesterday protesting the incident.
On the other hand, teachers and students of Sociology department protested the incident by boycotting classes yesterday. They also boycotted classes on Wednesday demanding immediate arrest of AL MP and leaders.
After carrying out reports over assaulting VC and teachers, Dablu Sarker, city AL GS filed a defamation case on Sunday against Bangla daily Kaler Kantha Editor Emdadul Haque Milon, Rajshahi staff reporter Rafiqul Islam and RU correspondent Rokon Rakib.
Terming the case as false and fabricated, the reporters of the university yesterday threatened to go on tougher movement if the case is not withdrawn immediately.
Rajshahi University Journalists’ Association (RUJA), Rajshahi University Reporters’ Unity (RURU) and Rajshahi University Press Club (RUPC) threatened of movement.
