Prospect of BARI ground-nut bright in Narsingdi

The prospect of BARI ground-nut cultivation is bright in different char areas of the district.
A vast area of sandy land across the rivers bank and char areas of Sadar, Raipura, Belabo and Monohardi upazilas was found suitable for ground-nut cultivation.
Agriculture expert have also urged the farmers to bring more land under cultivation of this type of ground-nut, an oil enriched seed variety in the district.
Bangladesh Krishi Research Institute released the variety last year after a latest research in the field. This variety ground-nut may give yield up to 4 to 5 tonnes per hectare of land if nurtured properly.
Deputy Director, Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Narsingdi Lotafat Hossain said the DAE is encouraging the farmers and giving them logistic support for cultivating the high yielding variety ground-nut in the sandy land across the river bank and char areas of the district.
He said farmers of the areas are now showing interest to cultivate BARI ground-nut in more land of the district and they will bring over 500 hectare of land in the coming season against the cultivation of 150 hectare last season.
The Deputy Director said with the minimum financial involvement the farmers can harvest about 5 maunds of BARI ground-nut worth Tk. 5,000 to 6,000 per bigha of land.
