Prosecution demands Regent Shahed’s highest punishment

The prosecution in the arms case filed against Regent Group Chairman Mohammad Shahed yesterday completed its arguments and sought the highest punishment (life term imprisonment) for the accused.
During Thursday’s hearing, Dhaka’s Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Abdullah Abu told the court, they have been able to prove the charges against accused Shahed of possessing firearms. They also sought the highest punishment of the accused in the case.
On completion of arguments, Judge KM Emrul Kayesh of Special Tribunal-1 of Dhaka then fixed September 20 for the next hearing in the case. Therefore, the defence lawyers will place arguments on Sunday on behalf of the accused.
During the hearing, Shahed told the court that he might be an offender but he was kept in an isolated cell in the jail.
Earlier, the tribunal recorded the statements of 10 prosecution witnesses, including complainant of the case.
The court framed charges against Shahed, accused in over 60 cases, on August 27 in this case.
Shahed was arrested on July 15 from Satkhira border area when he was trying to leave the country on a boat.
He was later remanded in a case filed over issuing fake Covid-19 test results and charging patients unfairly for testing and treatment.
On July 19, a team of DB police found Shahed’s private car in front of a house in Sector-11, in the city’s Uttara area. On the occasion they seized a pistol with a round of bullets from the car and later a case under the Arms Act was filed against him.
On July 30, DB Inspector Md Sairul Islam submitted the charge sheet of the case to the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court of Dhaka, showing 13 people prosecution witnesses in the case.
