Business Desk :
The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchases in a meeting on Monday asked the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics to retender the purchase of 3.95 lakh tablet computers for conducting a survey under the Population and Housing Census 2021 project.
Finance minister AHM Mustafa Kamal who presided over the meeting virtually told reporters that they had sent back the proposal of BBS because he preferred using tablet computers made in the country.
‘We want to reduce dependency on import,’ he said.
Earlier, the same committee sent back same proposal from BBS twice in the last four months – first on August 25 and later, on October 24.
On both the occasions, the cabinet body had asked more clarification from BBS about some issues of the procurement.
The delay in procurement of tablets, however, left BSS to miss the first deadline of a nationwide field level survey under the population census project in October 25-30.
BBS is going to miss the second deadline in December 24-30 because of the retender.
