Properties worth at least Tk 20 lakh were completely gutted when a depot of straws (used as ceiling for betel leaves gardens) caught fire at Jatrapur bazar within Jatrapur Union Parishad under Sadar Upazila in Bagerhat district on Monday afternoon. Abdul Matin, UP Chairman of Jatrapur said, the fire, perhaps, originated from a cigarette end spread to a number of heaps of straws and within minutes it went of control. On seeing the flame of fire the local people and the shop-keepers of the bazar rushed to the spot and tried to extinguish the fire, but in vain.
Being informed of the matter a fire unit rushed to the spot from Bagerhat district town and brought the fire under control after a long fighting for more than 2 hours with helps of the locals. In spit of that straws worth more than Tk.20 lakh were burnt to ashes. The affected straw traders are Maruf, Makhan, Jewell and Haidar. According to Sardar Masud, Deputy Director of Bagrhat Fire Service Station, the fire originated from a cigarette end.
