Fire gutted properties worth Tk 2 core including 22 shops and houses at Bakerganj upazila town of Barishal district on Saturday morning.
AZM Masuduzzaman, officer in charge of Bakerganj police station, said it was assumed that the fire started from electric short circuit at a shop of the market near the launch station at about 5:30 AM Saturday.
It rapidly spread towards the police station of the town.
Three units of fire service with the help of local people succeeded to control the flame within two hours.
In the meantime 20 shops and two houses burnt by fire, the police official added.
Kazi Saleh Mustanjir, upazila nirbahi officer, visiting the affected area said the administration preparing a list of the affected peopled and calculating the damages sent to higher authourity for necessary relief grants and help.
