Properties worth about Tk 15 lakhs were burnt and 10 people received injuries when a devastating fire gutted seven shops in Balithuba Bazar, a busy and bustling market under FaridganjUpazila at Tuesday night.
Fire fighters’ leader -Lytton Ahmed said, the fire perhaps originated from electric short circuit in a shop and it spread around rapidly engulfing one after the other.
Locals tried to douse the fire. On getting information, a fire fighters’ team led by Senior Station officer Lytton Ahmed of Chandpur (Uttar) Fire Station reached the spot at 10 pm and then after one hour’s frantic efforts, brought the flames under control at 11 pm. But by this time, five shops with all goods and commodities were burnt to ashes and two shops were partially burnt. The affected traders are Jashimuddin, Saiful and Humayun’s grocery shops and Kahhar and Lytton Mia’s electronic goods and Mobile Phone sets were burnt to ashes. Two other adjoining shops were damaged partially.
While dousing the flames, about ten people received burn injuries and they were later given treatment at local Upazila Health Complex and local clinics-said the locals.
Valuation of loss caused in the fire is estimated at approximately Tk 15 lakhs- claimed the affected traders and local UP Chairman Harunor Rashid after a preliminary assessment.
Upazila Chairman Zahidul Islam Roman, UNO Sheuli Hori, OC ShahidHossain and local UP Chairman Harunor Rashid visited the spot and consoled the affected traders.
