Proper use of libraries in ednl institutions for preventing social decay stressed

Librarians of different non-government educational institutions in Barisal Dvision holding a divisional conference on Friday urged proper use of libraries in educational institutions for preventing social decay and creating patriotic good citizenship.
They also called for proper status and valuation of librarians in non-government educational institutions to fulfill the aims and objects of creating the post.
The day long conference was arranged at Ashwini Kumar Hall in the city by newly emerged Bangladesh Association for Non-Government Academic Libraries (BANGAL).
It was presided over by Jebunnesa, convener of the conference and divisional councilor of Library Association of Bangladesh.
It was addressed among others by Prof. Ziaul Haque, chairman of Barisal Education Board, Dr. Mustafizur Rahman, deputy director of secondary and higher secondary education, Principal. Harunor Rashid and Prof. Mohsin Ul Islam Habul, president and secretary of Bangladesh College Teachers Association, Mujibul Haque, president Shikkhak Karmachari Front, Ilyas Shikdar Farhad, member secretary of BANGAL divisional committee, Dr. Habibur Rahman, human rights activist.
The speakers said history of library connected with the history of civilisation and classes of book-reading and using library were part of academic activities .
The area-based and educational institution-based libraries were also connected with wide range of socio-economic-cultural activities to develop social morality and creating good citizenship, they added.
But now a days area-based libraries almost extinct and libraries in educational institutions became almost inactive as librarians forced to perform duties in other sectors of the institutions, they noticed.
The participants called for including library science as a subject in higher secondary and degree level to create sufficient technical professionals for running libraries of educational institutions as digitalised modern library, information and documentation centers for all the citizen of the country.
The libraries of the educational institutions spread at grass root level and so librarians could work for developing the platform for co-operation with other relevant local, regional and international organizations, they said.
Librarians of non-government educational institutions also demanded proper professional status in service for properly performing professional duties and promoting the professionals proficiency.
They also called to help the professionals to co-operate with various libraries, information and documentation centers.
At the end of the conference a 31-member divisional committee of BANGAL was formed with Jebunnesa and Farhad as president and secretary.
