Veteran language heroes at a programme at Dhaka University urged all to practice and use Bangla language properly holding the spirit of the Language Martyrs’ Day in hearts.
“We have to speak in our mother tongue Bangla properly. The new generation has to learn about the glorious language movement holding its spirit and work for the mother language, homeland and own culture,” said veteran language hero Sabir Ahmed Chowdhury.
He said this on Thursday while addressing a discussion on ‘Language Movement Hero Abul Barkat Memorial Museum and Archive’ on its premises at Dhaka University (DU).
Sabir Ahmed, a 94-year language veteran said the implementation of using Bangla language everywhere has yet not been ensured. The state must take necessary steps regarding this.
“Nobody can live in the earth without loving his or her mother, motherland and mother language. For this reason, some of us laid down their lives for achieving the recognition of Bangla as the state language of erstwhile Pakistan on that day,” he added.
Language movement heroes, Rowshan Ara Bachchu recalled her experience and the memory of Salam, Barkat, Rafique, Shafiur, Jabbar and some other brave sons of this motherland who embraced martyrdom when police opened fire on the procession in front of the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital on February 21 in 1952.
“Defying Section 144, we brought out procession and broke police barricades on that day. There was vibrant presence of female students in the language movement. We’ve protected the dignity of our mother language in exchange for blood,” said 86-year-old Rowshan Ara who was a sophomore at philosophy department of DU at that time.
While addressing the programme as chief guest, former National University Vice- Chancellor Professor Dr Kazi Shahidullah urged the young generation not to lose the solemnity and spirit of language martyr’s day.
“The new generation is falling victims of cultural aggression. They should uphold our culture, heritage and glorious history,” he added.
Director of the museum and Dean of DU Arts Faculty Prof Dr Abu Md Delwar Hosain presided over the discussion.
