Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury inaugurated the ‘Mother and Child Support Programme’ arranged by the Women and Children Affairs Ministry at Bangabandhu International
Conference Centre (BICC) in the city on Wednesday. She also unveiled the official logo of the programme.”Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has undertaken different important initiatives and implemented projects for the welfare of mothers and children to achieve a healthy and developed nation and this programme is a part of that initiative”, an official press release quoted Shirin saying so while addressing as chief guest at the inaugural ceremony. Shirin quoted the programme as a milestone and said that, “The programme will ensure proper nutrition for both mothers and children, which is crucial for their development and well-being”.
“Under the programme nine services have been integrated into one which will be provided to the beneficiary mothers which will no doubt play a significant role in building a healthy society,” she said. She also said that the program aims to provide nutrition to children at different times from the mother’s womb to four years of age.
Shirin said that the government is enlarging the social safety net programme to ensure welfare of the poor and deprived and urged people to raise awareness among about it among people living in the remote areas. She mentioned the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and ‘Suchana Foundation’s initiative for “Mother and Child Welfare” and hoped that their combined efforts will definitely bring out the best.
The programme was presided over by the State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Begum Fazilatunnesa Indira.
Acting Secretary of Cabinet Division (coordination and reform) Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and World Food Programme (WFP) Representative to Bangladesh Richard Ragan, among others, spoke as special guests at the meeting.
