Proper functioning of computer labs in education instts stressed

Speakers at a discussion in Rajshahi mentioned that necessary steps must be taken to make the computer laboratories in educational institutions proper functioning for familiarizing and disseminating the knowledge of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) among the students effectively.
They observed that there is no alternative to equip the young generation with ICT knowledge and its proper application to bolster the sector of skilled human resources for facing the challenges of the 21st century.
The observations came at a meeting styled “Computer Laboratory Initiation in Educational Institutions in Rajshahi district” held at the conference hall of Deputy Commissioner yesterday. District Administration organized the meeting where all Upazila Nirbahi Officers and heads of 145 educational institutions attended.
Secretary to the ICT Division Shayam Sundar Shikder addressed the discussion as chief guest with Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury, Deputy Commissioner of Rajshahi, in the chair. Deputy Director of Local Government Dr Dewan Md Shahriar Firoj and Additional Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) Ataul Gani also spoke.
In his introductory remarks, DC Mejbah Uddin Chowdhury told the meeting that there are 77 computer labs in the district’s educational institutions and necessary process for setting up another 42 labs is progressing fast.
Chief Guest Shayam Sundar Shikder says the government will set up computer lab at 2,000 educational institutions across the country. Each lab will have 21 laptops, a printer, a scanner, a multi-media projector, two routers and equipment for language learning under the project.
A project in this regard has been adopted with provision to implement within June 2016. After assuming power from 2009 till date, the government has also set up computer lab at 3,544 educational institutions throughout the country, he informed.
Already, he said the promoted ICT- based modern multimedia classroom has opened up a new dimension in teaching-learning system of the educational institutions.
The digital contents in the multimedia classroom have emerged as a tool for the students to come out of memorising knowledge ending a more-than-a-century- old traditional teacher centered learning system.
In future, more other technology-based multimedia classrooms will be set up in phases introducing modern teaching method aimed at bringing out the students from the practice of memorising knowledge, he added.
