Visiting three MPs of British Labour Party on Monday said they will work for the restoration of UK visa centre in Bangladesh.
The three British MPs-Sir Keir Starmer, Stephen Timms and Steve Reed-made the commitment when they met Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her Sangsad Bhaban office with other eight members under the banner of Labour Friends of Bangladesh.
PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed reporters after the meeting. Labour Friends of Bangladesh are now in Bangladesh as part of their programme to ‘Meet, Listen and Learn’ from Bangladesh.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina sought more British investment in the country, especially in the Special Economic Zones (SEZs), emphasised establishing food processing industries in the SEZs.
Sheikh Hasina said, the relations between Bangladesh and Britain are traditional and excellent, and mentioned that there are similarities between the Labour Party and Bangladesh Awami League on various policies.
About the large number of British Bangladeshis and Bangladeshi expatriates living in Britain, Hasina said they are contributing to the economies of both the countries.
On climate change issues, she mentioned that Bangladesh is the most vulnerable to climate change. “Bangladesh has got many pledges for climate fund, but received a very negligible amount,” she said adding that the country has taken various programmes to face the adverse impacts of climate change with its own resources.
The three British MPs said, there are huge Bangladeshis living in their constituencies.
