UNB, Dhaka :
Five mayoral candidates of the two city corporations in Dhaka who attended a roundtable on Monday promised to work sincerely for resolving the city’s myriads of problems if they elected.
Daily Prothom Alo organised the roundtable, titled ‘If I were a Mayor’, at its office in the city’s Karwanbazar.
Awami League-sponsored mayoral candidate for Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Sayeed Khokon on Monday said if he gets elected he will solve all the problems of Dhaka rising above the party interest and his political ideology.
Sayeed Khokon also promised not to make Nagar Bhaban (City Corporation Building) a centre of partisan politics and turn it truly into a citizen building.
Talking about the problems of Dhaka, he said, “There are problems in the city and so have solutions; I want to solve all the problems staying above the political ideology.”
Speaking at the programme, Annisul Huq, Awami League-supported mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), said if he gets elected he will solve the problems of Dhaka by categorising those in short-, middle- and long-term ones.
He also hoped to establish the city as a clean, safe, and traffic congestion- free one.
The City Corporation building can be transformed into a citizen building by solving the problems taking comprehensive and participatory initiatives, he added.
BNP-blessed mayoral candidate for Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), Tabith Awal said ward-wise criminal mapping will be laid out to reduce crimes in the city if he gets elected.
Launching new bus routes, modernising waste management system and solving water problem are Tabith’s other commitments ahead of the election.
Another candidate for DNCC election, Zonayed Saki said people’s urge to establish a metropolitan government in the city would be raised if he is elected mayor.
Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh (BDB)-backed mayor candidate for DNCC Mahi B Chowdhury said everyone knows the problems as well as the solutions; however, the big issue is in which way the problems will be solved.
Saying that the new generation will sow the seeds of change through the upcoming election, Mahi said he would eradicate drug abuse and make the city safe for women, and ensure gender equality if he is elected its mayor.
