Project worth Tk 5,616 cr on the cards to mitigate waterlogging in Port City

With a view to removing water logging from the port city, the Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) has taken a mega project involving Taka 5,616 crore.
The CDA is going to implement the project with the supervision of Bangladesh Army Engineering Department from this month.
In this regard, a meeting was held between the authorities of CDA and Bangladesh Army Engineering Department at the CDA auditorium on Monday with CDA chairman Abdus Salam in the chair.
CDA chairman Abdus Salam said the meeting has decided to start the project this month.
He said, “Although different projects have been taken earlier, residents of the port city yet to get rid of water logging.”
The project entities include re-excavation of 36 canals within the city areas, construction of 12 sluice gates and pump house on the estuary of six canals, construction of six culverts, procurement of necessary equipment, cleaning of 320km long existing drains, construction of retaining wall of 178 kilometres, construction of 48 girder bridges, re-excavation of all existing drains in 302 kilometre areas and installation of 880 electric poles.
The preliminary works of the project is expected to start this month, he said, adding that later as per the recommendation of the consultant, remaining works will be implemented in phases.
Water logging has made the life of people in Chittagong city miserable as most of roads remain submerged during the rainy season. Consequently, water logging has become one of the prime problems for resident of the port city. In August, 2017, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved the project involving Taka 5,616 crore with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
At the meeting, the premier also directed the LGRD ministry to scrutinize the project profile carefully by its technical committee, Salam added.
Following the directives of the PM, Ministry of LGRD instantly constituted a technical committee consisting representatives from CDA, Chittagong City Corporation, Chittagong WASA, Water Development Board and Engineering core of Bangladesh Army.
Chief Engineer of CDA was made member secretary of the committee. In the meantime, a number of meetings of the technical committee were held with Chief Engineer of Engineering Department of Bangladesh Army.
CDA chairman also disclosed that following the cordiality of the Prime Minister, CDA in his history, first ever Mega Project of about Tk 6,000 crores is going to be implemented in a very short time. “There is no uncertainty over the implementation of the mega water logging project,” he added.
