The government is to undertake a project for intensifying anti-militancy campaign throughout the country, Religious Affairs Minister Principal Motiur Rahman told the House on Tuesday. Replying to a starred scripted query from treasury bench member Shamsul Haque Chowdhury (Chittagong-12), the minister said a project proposal for carrying out anti-militancy publicity is awaiting approval.
“Once the scheme is okayed, strengthening of anti-militancy campaign would be possible,” he said.
Principal Motiur said discussions over social unrest, terrorism and militancy are being held before the khutba (religious sermon) through the imams at 55,180 mosques under the “mosque-based children and mass education programme” and other imams across the country.
He said anti-terrorism and militancy discussions and seminars are being arranged at divisional, district and upazila levels.
“The campaign against social unrest, terrorism and militancy is going on through the imams of Imam Training Academy,” he added.
Responding to another starred question from Begum Sanjida Khanam, the religious affairs minister said according to survey conducted by Islamic Foundation in 2008, the number of total mosques in Dhaka city is 5,776.
He said a project for reconstruction of Andarkillah Shahi Jame Mosque has been undertaken with Kuwaiti assistance, adding the issue of constructing other mosques would be considered with the availability of foreign aid.
