Project taken to protect Jamuna erosion in Gaibandha

Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) has taken up a project to protect the area along the right bank of the Jamuna River under Sadar and Fulchhari upazilas of the district from erosion.
Official sources said Operation and Maintenance Division of BWDB under the Ministry of Water Resources would implement the project entitled ‘Protection of Baguria, Balashighat, Ratanpur, Singria, Katlamari and Mass Graveyard areas of the upazilas from the erosion.
The main objective of the project, involving Taka 331 crore, is to protect hundreds hectares of land with most valuable immovable properties from the erosion of the river Jamuna and to save the Mass Graveyard of Martyred freedom fighters.
Executive engineer of BWDB here Prokash Krishna Sarkar said the river bank protection work would be done along the 4400-metre long of the river bank of the upazilas.
In reply to a query the executive engineer said the development work is likely to start at the vulnerable areas of the upazilas at the beginning of the next fiscal just after completing all the official formalities in May and June.
