Progressive student bodies brought out on Wednesday a protest procession and formed human chain condemning the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) for attacking a protest rally over the fire accident of the BM Container Depot.
They also demanded proper investigation into the BM Container Depot fire for justice and paying compensation to the victim families.
The leaders and activists of different leftist student organisations under the banner of progressive students bodies brought out the protest procession from Modhur Canteen of Dhaka University (DU) and staged a human chain in front of Aparajeya Bangla after proceeding to the several point of the university. “All these accidents are happening due to the negligence of the weak and inexperienced mismanagement. These accidents are not just accidents. Indifference is also a vital cause,” they added.
“But BCL attack us when we protest the government negligence,” they said.
“On Monday, after finishing the human chain at Shahbagh, we were on the way to the Raju sculpture with a procession and as we reached in front of Shahbagh police station, BCL leaders and activists suddenly attacked us with bricks and stones,” Joydeep Bhattacharya, acting president of the Socialist Student Front, said.
“Some eight members of the bodies including Anik Roy, vice-president of the Student Union, were hurt in the attack and Anik Roy received eight stitches in his head at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital. We stressed a strong protest against the attack,” he added.
Moudut Hawlader, Shahbagh Police Station Officer-in-Charge said, “I was informed about the incident. The leaders and activists of the progressive student’s bodies were attacked by BCL men due to a quarrel between them over whether to cross the road but we did not get any complaint yet in this regard.”
However, Leaders and activists of the Chhatra Odhikar Parishad staged a human chain protest on Monday demanding to arrest BM Container Depot owner’s Mujibur Rahman and fair investigation into the corruption, negligence and the lack of safety measures for chemical storage.
While Bin Yeamin Mollah demanded that the families of those killed in the fire and explosion at the depot will have to be paid Tk one crore and the injured Tk 50 lakh as well as the sons of the victims will have to be paid for their education till they reach adulthood.
